Dear Alumni,

Greetings from the Iota Theta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity! I am writing this letter on behalf of our brothers who cordially invite you to participate in our annual Sigma Chi Golf Outing on, Saturday, April 14th, 2012. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the success of our Fraternity and its members in a less formal setting than at our auction weekend. It is a fun weekend enabling you to socialize with your son, our brothers, other parents, and alumni.

We are very excited about the standing of our Fraternity as a whole right now, being one of the most well respected groups in our Greek community on campus. With one of the largest pledge classes in our history picked out this spring, we are very proud and want to celebrate our success by increasing our participation of active brothers, parents, and alumni at this year’s outing. In an effort to achieve this increase, I have obtained a new golf course for this outing. We will be playing at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace, which has recently been voted “Dayton’s Best Golf Course” for the 7th year in a row. In addition, the cost of the outing has decreased from $80.00/person (last year) to $65.00/per person.

This $65.00 fee will include: - 18 holes of golf w/cart- Unlimited range balls prior to the round- Boxed lunch prior to the round- Refreshments and food after round at the Sigma Chi house

On Saturday afternoon, the outing will tee off at 1:30 pm in a Shotgun format (each foursome will be placed on individual pre-selected holes). The format of the tournament will be a 4-man scramble. For those who are unfamiliar with the format, it means that within your group, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, and then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.

After the round is complete, there will be a short awards ceremony at the golf course. Shortly following the awards, all are invited back to the Sigma Chi house at 461 Kiefaber Street for a cookout.

As has been done in the past, hole sponsorships will be sold for $75/per hole. Local organizations will be contacted for their support; however, past outings have received most of their help from donations by specific families or individuals. All sponsorships help out tremendously, and each donation is greatly appreciated. All extra funds accumulated from the event will directly benefit the Fraternity.

Sigma Chi raises thousands of dollars for children’s hospital

On Saturday, March 12, Sigma Chi and many of its members’ parents joined forces for the fraternity’s annual parent’s weekend in order to raise thousands of dollars for the Children’s Miracle Network, according to member Chris Milkie, a finance major.

The CMN is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals. Dayton Children’s is a local hospital affiliated with the organization, and all money raised locally through the CMN directly benefits it, according to the hospital’s website. Sigma Chi members dedicated most of last weekend to raising money for their philanthropy.

“Everyone in the fraternity works together to ensure a successful weekend for parents, chapter members and most importantly, the CMN,” Milkie said.

On Saturday, Sigma Chi members, their families and alumni attended several events including a silent auction, dinner and live auction at the Dayton Marriott Hotel. Items auctioned off included neon signs, vacations, golf clubs, iPods, assorted baskets and Sigma Chi paraphernalia. These goods were mainly donated from members, their families, alumni and local businesses, according to Milkie.

“The fact that our parents can support us in our philanthropic efforts is really special,” said Patrick Roy, another Sigma Chi member and accounting major. “We celebrate good health as a family and as a fraternity by donating money to local children less fortunate.”

At the event, a CMN and Dayton Children’s Hospital representative, Jill Lewis, spoke to the audience on the subject of Sigma Chi’s relationship with CMN. Additionally, 12-year-old CMN ambassador Bailey Allen was present along with her mother, Angie. Several years ago, a tumor was discovered in Bailey’s foot, and she was diagnosed with a rare cancer called congenital fibrosarcoma. Through chemotherapy and surgery, Bailey’s foot was spared, and she has since recovered. Milkie said it was important to have Bailey at the fundraiser.

“She benefited directly from the CMN and surgical care at Dayton Children’s Hospital,” he said. “Her presence alone truly made our fundraising efforts worthwhile.”

Sigma Chi’s fundraiser made approximately $13,000 in total, and between $4,000 and $5,000 will be going directly to the CMN and Dayton Children’s, according to Milkie. The CMN is Sigma Chi’s national philanthropy, and chapters throughout the nation help donate to the cause.

The University of Dayton’s Sigma Chi chapter officially chose the CMN and Dayton Children’s Hospital as its philanthropy in 1999. Since then, the chapter has raised nearly $40,000 for the local hospital. In her speech, Lewis announced that nationally, Sigma Chi has donated over $5,000,000 since declaring CMN as its philanthropy.

“CMN is not just any philanthropy,” Roy said. “It’s heartbreaking when children get sick and are forced to face hardships that shouldn’t be present at such a young age. The fact that our donations help toward improving their lives and changing their struggles into smiles is invaluable.”

Sigma Chi raises over $4000 for Dayton Children’s Hospital           

On March 12, 2011 the brothers of Sigma Chi, along with their friends and families, helped to raise over $4000 for Dayton Children’s Hospital.  As part of their Parent’s Weekend activities, Sigma Chi hosted an event at the Dayton Marriott for the Children’s Miracle Network.  Throughout the evening, donations continued to roll in for both the live and silent actions. The brothers had a great time sharing their philanthropic enthusiasm with their families and we hope that their families enjoyed their time at UD! Great job Sigma Chi!!!
